This is the first time I publish something in English in this blog. I am doing it because, since this time I’m just copy – pasting some information about Julia Butterfly Hill – and quoting her from a great speech – I though it would be a nice idea to publish it in English since I already did the work to put it together.
Julia Butterfly Hill (born February 18, 1974 as Julia Lorraine Hill) is an American activist and environmentalist. Hill is best known for living in a 180-foot (55 m)-tall, roughly 1500-year-old California Redwood tree (age based on first-hand ring count of a slightly smaller neighboring ancient redwood that had been cut down) for 738 days between December 10, 1997 and December 18, 1999. Hill lived in the tree, affectionately known as “Luna,” to prevent loggers of the Pacific Lumber Company from cutting it down. She is the author of the book The Legacy of Luna and co-author of One Makes the Difference. From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_Butterfly_Hill
Julia Butterfly Hill gave a wonderful speech on 2010, here are some quotes of it:
Every single choice changes the world
It’s impossible not to make a difference
Every single, one of us, are ancestors to the future
Disconnection is a disease. If we are disconnected from the Earth, we can destroy it and not realize that we are destroying our very own selves … if we are disconnected from people we can drop bombs on them and call them statistics. Unless we’re mindful, that disease shows up over and over again.
People come and tell me “Julia thank you for living in that tree for two years. I could have never done that. And I always respond: never could have I. I did not plan on living on a tree for 2 years and 8 days. If I had seen what was coming, I would never have done it. It would have scared me way too much, because my mind would have said: “that’s not possible”
I’m committed to live fully and presently in love.
That day when our conversation between activists degraded and fell apart, I realized that part of the reason is… we see something that’s happening in the world, we care, it touches us deeply, we go, we have to do something. But what we haven’t done enough of, it’s realize that that external wound is a mirror for that internal wound, and as we are doing the work in the world, we also have to be doing that internal work of healing the wounds within ourselves.
Every choice has a thread that’s connected before and after. If we had to be present to every thing that we buy or throw away, where is that thread? Who is impacting? … if we had to walk the impact of every choice that we made every day, I think our actions would begin to shift. Because love would call us to make a different choice. What would love choose in this moment?
